More on Dressing

Several of you commented, and I had an email exchange with Ashley, about not thinking about what you put on in the morning. All hail, the people who dress on auto-pilot! You are in very good company. For example … Michael Kors. I remember hearing him answer a viewer question about this on one of those Project Runway season wrap-up shows. The viewer was suggesting that it was ridiculous that a fashion designer would wear the very same thing all the time. Presumably, wearing a plain black sportcoat and tee with jeans every day didn’t strike this viewer as a good marketing statement for buying designer clothing.

Kors’ response was that, as a young man, he wore all sorts of crazy things. But at some point, he found it easier to be creative in his designing when he wasn’t expending so much energy on his own wardrobe. So he figured out what looked good on him* and what was comfortable, wore that and stopped thinking about it.

I’ve got respect for that sartorial philosophy, especially the part about figuring out what’s flattering on you. I’ve tried to do this of late. For example, I have concluded that the crewneck looks awful on me. I am never happy with a crewneck.

But his response also makes another point: you have to choose your creative outlets. And that outlet ought to be something that is important to you, that you enjoy, and that inspires you. If getting dressed isn’t it, then, by all means, don those jeans and tees with pride. But wear handknit socks.

* Just an aside: I am a big fan of the sportcoat/t-shirt/jeans combo on men. Big fan.

I’m one of those that can’t be bothered in the morning to think what looks good. I’m a tee-jeans-sneakers gal about 90% of the time. It’s comfy, it works, don’t care if people think I should be beyond the “student” wardrobe. The other 10% accepts some variation, but it’s usually the days when I don’t have to be somewhere at some time.

I completely agree, with the handknit socks portion. I still own clothes from before high school, and in one week I’ll have two college degrees. Though, I shall be updating the wardrobe, what with the whole work thing and all. Definitely been filling my Ravelry queue with any office-appropriate vests I’ve found recently!

I love the sport coat jeans thing but I hate when he’s orange!

Have you noticed that Vera Wang frequently (only) wears black too?

also love a man in t-shirt, jacket, and jeans?

(I love Michael Kors! I have a pair of his sandals and a bag and I adore them)
    anywho-
I was a makeup artist and stylist many moons ago and found that a lot of people in the industry had kind of found their own comfy “uniforms”. For myself, I sometimes wore a TON of makeup and looked like Cleopatra, Snow White’s wicked step-mother, Siouxsie Sioux, or a man in drag (unfortunately)… But I NEVER wore makeup every day. In fact, 99% of the time, I wear no makeup at all. (Good moisturizer with suscreen, lip balm and drinking alot of water will get you everywhere)
And when I baked for a living, all I wanted was raw tuna when I got off work. Nothing complicated!
One of my favorite sculptors- Louise Nevelson, wore only black and said that black contains all colors (vs. white: the absence of color), so that when one looked at the color black one was seeing any time of day, any quality of light, any emotion or memory. Using the color black allowed her to contemplate shape and to sculpt.
I think freeing yourself up (via simplicity) in order to be creative in the parts of your life that mean the most to you is a very natural, zen-like and fantastic thing!
Now I am a nanny/cook and I need to wear comfy clothes for two year olds’ sticky yucky fingers to grab and an apron to stay clean when I’m cooking, so I don’t really think about what I am wearing very much at all these days… and mostly, it’s a relief.
Having said all that- WHAT am i wearing to the Sex and the City party tonite???
    🙂

I have to say that crewnecks are unflattering on most women. Something about the way it chops the neck off and increases the side of the chest area–and yet i persist with crew necks, because they’re easy! But I do try to only wear them to bed or for lazing around the house. I think about what I wear but definitely skew toward comfortable . . .

  8. Thanx fer reminding me of that episode — now I have an answer for the guys at my rock band’s 20th reunion when I *don’t* show up wearing plaid, stripes *and* polka-dots! [grin]…
